Tip 1 – Never mix different products
Mixing cleaning products can cause dangerous chemical reactions or even explosions. Some examples:
- Vinegar with baking soda
- Products containing bleach, like bleach itself, with ammonia
- Products containing bleach with vinegar
- Products containing bleach with disinfectant alcohol
- Hydrogen peroxide with vinegar
- Mixing different drain cleaners
Tip 2 – Always read the label
The packaging of cleaning products contains important information about proper use and potential dangers.
- If a product is no longer in its original packaging and the instructions are missing, do not use it! You can't be sure what’s inside.
- If you see hazard symbols on the label, do not use the product.
- If the product only has the hazard symbol with an exclamation mark (or the old version with the cross), it can be used, but always wear gloves and follow the instructions carefully. It's also always recommended to wear gloves while cleaning.
Tip 3 – Prevent splashing
- Always pour liquid products carefully to avoid splashes and skin contact.
- If you have a splash guard or screen, use it while pouring.
- Do not overfill the bucket and use the rim of the bucket to rest the product against while pouring.
- Tilt the can, bottle, or jug a quarter turn when pouring. This prevents the product from splashing. Additionally, your hand will be underneath the can/bottle/jug, providing extra support and protection.
Tip 4 – Save emergency numbers in your phone
In case something goes wrong, immediately call the Poison Control Center and inform your office. Save these important numbers in your phone. With these tips, you can work safely and responsibly.
